Synopsis
Emma et Dexer se sont rencontrés à l'université. Le 15 juillet 1988, après une nuit mouvementée où ils ont failli coucher ensemble, les deux jeunes adultes se sont promis de rester des amis pour toujours... et ils ont respecté cette entente, malgré quelques frictions, au cours des vingt années suivantes. Même s'ils n'étaient pas toujours dans la même ville ou le même pays, Emma et Dexter ont tous partagé leurs échecs et leurs réussites, leur mariage et leur divorce, leurs espoirs et leurs détresses, tout, absolument tout. Seulement, l'amour s'approche parfois si dangereusement de l'amitié qu'on en vient à douter de la teneur de nos sentiments.

Il manque à cette adaptation du best-seller de David Nicholls un souffle romanesque puissant, qui aurait tonifié ce pas de deux monotone. Noeud du problème : l'origine littéraire du récit, qui n'est jamais transcendée.

Lone Scherfig, the Danish director who is fast becoming one of the foremost interpreters of British culture, has performed a bit of magic in One Day, the film adaptation of David Nicholls' best-selling novel.

Telling a love story over the course of 20 years is no easy task, and One Day had everything it needed to pull it off, but loses something crucial in the leap from page to screen.
And as it traces the orbit of their devoted friendship and almost-love, One Day turns an episodic story into an anthology of feelings and associations, many familiar, a few surprising, some embarrassing and one or two worth holding onto.

One Day wanders into several mini-dramas, mostly concerning Dex, who is the activist of this story; Emma is frequently the woman in waiting, a lost soul yearning for her soulmate.

Le résultat final se révèle une suite de courts chapitres s'enchaînant mécaniquement à laquelle même les lumineuses Patricia Clarkson et Romola Garai peinent à donner un semblant d'âme lors de leurs trop courtes apparitions.

Malgré les efforts que mettent les artisans pour créer un climat empathique, le spectateur reste indifférent au sort commun des deux héros. Voilà bien le drame d'un film qui assume pourtant pleinement son caractère romantique.
