This is mostly due to the charm of Eve and Baruchel, playing the two normal people in a sea of wise-guy sidekicks, irritating family members, bitchy best friends and the rest of the menagerie that populates most of the modern coarse comedy. She's Out of My League looks like it's going in that direction, but this is a film that's an improvement on its trailer, another rarity.

She's Out of My League tries to live in the murky, grey realm between the raunchy stratosphere of Judd Apatow's movies and the cellar dweller, watered down formula romantic comedies usually populated by Grey's Anatomy leftovers. It succeeds in finding a level between those rom-com extremes, unfortunately that middle ground is as mediocre as you'd expect it to be.

What he brings to She's Out of My League, in addition to the geek and the gawk, is a dash of the debonair, which might seem impossible and yet he does. The character also goes for polite over pot as a central reason for his schlubian state, a quality so rare in these modern times that it seems like an entirely new concept. What's next, no more knuckle-dragging friends?

Baruchel, a member of the Knocked Up/Tropic Thunder repertory company, is a charmer, his Kirk a self-effacing, modest, socially high-functioning guy of limited charisma but sweet disposition. And though she might have gotten away with being just a pretty face, Eve brings a genuineness to Molly that's refreshing, especially in a genre that usually treats young women like chuck roast.

If they'd perhaps shared an interest in anything, we might more easily buy this romance. But he's an awkward underachiever with low self-esteem and little ambition, and she's a worldly lawyer and event planner, brimming with confidence. The one believable aspect is his neurotic nagging sense that he's not worthy, and the effect that has on their relationship.
