Overall, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is a huge misfire and tanks what could have been an ok B-grade side franchise for Reynolds, Jackson and Hayek. Too bad, as the original isn't a bad little movie and this could have been a fun action flick to kick off the summer.

Screenwriters Tom O'Connor, Phillip Murphy and Brandon Murphy display no interest in how credible characters -- even cartoonishly exaggerated comic ones -- might really behave under circumstances like these, which wouldn't be so bad if the movie were funnier.

Leaving everything on the field, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is an over-the-top love letter to violence, profanity, and pop music.

Supposedly, a third entry has been greenlit. Just make it a solo Hayek joint, or, to paraphrase Jackson, put this motherfucking franchise out of its motherfucking misery.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, this comic book-energy spy adventure, gorgeously captured by cinematographer Terry Stacey and keenly scripted with barbed dialogue from Tom O'Connor, Brandon Murphy, and Phillip Murphy, is heavy on blood, guts, action, and star power. It really is time for a summer movie season again.
