Synopsis
À la mort de Richard Coeur de Lion, son frère le Roi Jean monte sur le trône d'Angleterre, levant de nouveaux impôts, se mettant à dos son propre royaume. Pendant ce temps, son protégé Godefroy fraie avec l'ennemie, la France, envahissant les villages sur son chemin, tuant au passage ses habitants. Tout juste revenu de la guerre pour exaucer le dernier souhait d'un mourant, Robin Longstride et ses compagnons se portent au secours de la veuve et de l'orphelin, prenant bien soin de protéger Lady Marianne. Un nouveau conflit plane à l'horizon et un tel homme pourra en inspirer plusieurs autres.

Malgré un démarrage un peu long et bavard, ainsi que quelques procédés dramatiques appuyés, ce nouveau Robin Hood soutient l'intérêt, grâce au sérieux de ses données historiques et à ses spectaculaires séquences de combats, d'assauts de forteresses ou d'embuscades, mises en scène avec panache par Scott.

Une intrigue passe-partout qui prend difficilement son essor tant le scénario est mal développé, survolant rapidement les personnages et les lieux, cherchant à tout dire sans jamais expliquer les motivations profondes. Cela donne une première partie qui est loin d'être passionnante, le cinéphile étant parfois plus attentif à relever les erreurs historiques qu'à suivre les déroutes d'êtres peu charismatiques.

Beaucoup de bruit et de furie, donc, mais rien qu'on n'a pas souvent vu auparavant, en mieux. Mentionnons tout de même que Russell Crowe est viril à souhait dans le rôle éponyme et que Cate Blanchett fait une charmante Marianne.

Neither Robin (Crowe) nor Maid Marion (Blanchett) come to life in this plastic landscape of formulaic plot and derivative character, and, as a result, the whole movie collapses in upon itself like an inflatable castle leaking air.

Ridley Scott et son scénariste Brian Helgeland n'entendent pas à rire et nous proposent un Robin Hood intense et dénué d'humour, homme tragique et valeureux, capable d'amour, mais qui prend trop son temps, et le nôtre, avant d'embrasser enfin sa dulcinée (Cate Blanchett en Marion Loxley).

The grim gray cinematography and mud on everyones' clothes and faces lend this Robin Hood more medieval authenticity than most film versions of the story, but halfway through this seemingly endless film you may find yourself longing for a Bryan Adams power ballad, or maybe an animated fox with a feather in his cap.

That might not be so bad if the alternative portrait was intriguing. But Robin Hood, as envisioned by Ridley Scott and scripted by Brian Helgeland, is an unnecessary and wrong-headed reboot.
It's also true that director Scott's facility with the spectacle of battle makes everything he does worth investigating, though this film finally lacks the clarity of his best work and misses the joy of the Robin Hoods that captivated previous generations. As it lumbers its way toward the finish line, it's hard not to wish that Robin Hood's plot was as nailed down as all those on-target arrows.
Clearly a long way from Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn (and, to no one's complaint, Kevin Costner), pic can't help but play like a joyless corrective to Robin Hood's prior screen adventures, with their buoyant mix of wit, romance, green tights and derring-do.
So is Robin Hood one big medieval tea party? Kind of, though that description makes the movie sound both more fun and more provocative than it actually is.
