Synopsis
La Grande Dépression sévit aux États-Unis. Ayant dû abandonner ses études de vétérinaire après la mort de ses parents, Jacob se retrouve par inadvertance dans un train qui appartient à August, le méchant propriétaire d'un cirque. Après avoir obtenu la confiance de son hôte, le jeune homme se voit confier la responsabilité de la santé des animaux. C'est là qu'il tombe sous le charme de la jolie épouse de son patron, Marlena, qui est chargée de chevaucher la nouvelle attraction principale de la troupe : un éléphant qui n'en fait qu'à sa tête.

Délaissant l'univers de la science-fiction, Francis Lawrence adapte un best-seller de Sara Gruen pour façonner un film d'aventures romanesque et plutôt bien troussé, mis en scène avec une élégance discrète.

This old-fashioned melodrama about a romance set amid the big top is mildly entertaining, though the best performances come not from the stars, but the supporting players.
The Reese Witherspoon-Robert Pattinson film will please fans of Sara Gruen's best seller, but it lacks the vital spark that would have made the drama truly compelling on the screen.

Overall, Water for Elephants may be a flawed and somewhat inconsistent film, but damn if I didn't enjoy it a heck of a lot more than I thought I would.
But the timid screen adaptation, directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Richard LaGravenese, short-circuits the novel's quirky charms and period atmosphere by its squeamish attitude toward gritty circus life and smothers the drama under James Newton Howard's insufferable wall-to-wall musical soup.

The central humans do a good job pulling us into this three-ringed circus of cliche, but it's really the other elements that provide the real attraction.

Drame romantique conventionnel qui fait oublier sa grande prévisibilité par l'honnêteté apportée à ses sentiments, Water for Elephants fera fondre les âmes sensibles qui s'imaginent que Robert Pattinson est l'homme idéal pour Reese Witherspoon.

Et puis? Et puis l'ensemble tombe à plat. Les personnages restent bidimensionnels, n'émergent pas de l'écran. Leur drame non plus. Les glandes lacrymales, même celles qui réagissent au quart de tour, ne sécrètent aucune larme. C'est un signe. Pas un bon.

Instead they have remained true to the book and its faults, creating a movie that's good and engaging but never great, almost exactly as rewarding as the novel but also slightly underwhelming in the end.
